Benjamin's Easter shirt

$

Benjamin models design #36 from the summer 2009 Ottobre magazine.
Benjamin requested a new giraffe shirt for Easter. He had a woven pullover top with a giraffe print and applique that he finally outgrew, so it was time for something a little more sophisticated, but just as giraffe-y.
He helped me select this spring green fabric at Elegant Stitches and I cut the pieces before stitching out the giraffe scene on the bottom left front piece.

The shirt has nice details like side vents and a great pocket design. The collar is a one piece construction.

Benjamin is a satisfied client on this one. He wanted to leave it on tonight, but I told him he wasn't wearing it until Easter Sunday. I have a feeling I will be seeing this one on him many Sundays!

A smocked dress for Gracie and a button-down for big brother Jamie:

Gracie is wearing Australian Smocking & Embroidery #88 "Blush" in a soft, floral print.

Jamie is wearing Ottobre magazine 03-2012 #21 shirt. I think they coordinate well together (and will look good in pictures with Benjamin's green giraffe shirt).

I just need to pick up a new polo shirt for oldest brother Matthew to complete the kids' look.

Meanwhile, I have Vogue 1398 cut and ready to sew for myself in a medium lavender shade of purple crepe.

Cheaper, better, and more stylish!

I will have to confess a certain amount of smug satisfaction when I can out-do what is available at the stores. My new favorite pattern fits the bill for that perfectly. McCall's 6918 has an array of adorable skorts for girls sizes 3-14 and they are quick and easy to make. Plus, it is WAY cheaper to do it yourself and then it can be custom as well. One skort like this (albeit plain color most likely) from Children's Place would likely cost about $12-18 and don't even get me started on Justice and their constant 40% off sale combined with outrageous starting price mark-up.

I need to pick up some back-up copies of this pattern at the next McCall's 99cent sale!

My Easter dress - Vogue 1398 by Badgley Mischka

I went designer this year with this really awesome new Vogue pattern.

It's by designers Badgley Mischka and I love the interesting skirt details. I'm usually not a solid color girl, but the details needed a solid fabric to stand out.

I added an inch to the bodice length as an FBA,and lined the dress with ivory Ambiance lining. I even added lingerie keepers to keep my bra straps from playing peek-a-boo.

I did skip the seam binding at the inside back zipper. Both the lining and the crepe fashion fabric needed a little serger action to keep from fraying so the binding ended up being unnecessary.

I like that you construct the dress as two sep. pieces and then once the top and skirt are joined, it doesn't take long to finish (even though the skirt is a bit tedious to construct).

After church today, we took some pictures in our Easter finery. I made two dresses and two shirts this year. I'm glad I didn't pressure myself to make more, since I ended up doing last minute Easter bunny shopping last night and got each child some candy, a book, and one other item.

Jamie is such a cool character these days.

 Gracie gives us the

princess pose.
Benjamin really likes his giraffe shirt.
 My babies are getting big.
 Silly picture!
I made DH match me with his tie.

At home with Easter goodies - Gracie got a chapter book which she is excited about!

My sweet girl models "Gypsy Dance" by AS&E.

 Don'tcha love Benjamin's oh-so-cool hat?

The dress is twirl-approved.

I have cleared my cut, but not yet sewn, backlog! I finally finished the dress from Australian Smocking & Embroidery that I had begun in March. It's "Gypsy Dance" from Issue 86. The colors are so much fun, but I underestimated my piping needs and ran out before I finished the bottom tier, so I improvised with prepackaged, double-fold bias tape. She said she feels like a princess in it (and even let me curl her hair this morning before I took pictures and we went to church).

I also completed Butterick 5924, a shirt just made for a bias plaid.
Another fabric-specific project was Ottobre Woman 02-2014 #1. I just had to shorten it a little to make my fabric work. I think I'll be wearing some bike shorts under this! It's cute for casual summer wear, though.

Finally, I completed a second version of Jamie's Easter shirt - this time in a lovely classic seersucker stripe. He had some fun modeling it for me and definitely approved the look.

Cheer Gear

Since Gracie is at the cheer gym 3-4 nights a week now, I have an excuse to play with Lycra and Jalie patterns some more!

This outfit is made from three Jalie patterns:

The sports bra is from Jalie 2563. I added FOE (fold-over elastic) to trim the edges.

The skirt is from Jalie 3023 with the boy shorts from Jalie 2796 underneath it (attached). This was a Frankenpattern of a swimsuit bottom from the tankini pattern with a short that had more coverage.

I made the cheer bow myself. I got 3 inch wide grosgrain ribbon and use Heat N- Bond Lite to attach the lycra to two 18 inch pieces of ribbon. The bow is sewn together securely and finished with 3/8 inc black ribbon at the knot. I sewed it to the elastic band as well (without going through the elastic).

Ready for the pool

I always dread buying a swimsuit - not because my body isn't exactly bikini-ready (it isn't...whatever), but because when your bra size goes pretty far up the alphabet, getting a top that fits is horrendously difficult.
This year, I am determined to conquer that problem. I went with Simplicity 1374 and did an FBA by increasing the size of the bodice piece. I also changed the halter straps to a cross back and sewing the bodice lining to an internal elastic band (the kind meant for the bottom of a bra) to make an internal bra for this.

The bottom is Jalie 3023. Luckily, that was quick, easy, and no fitting issues!

The coverup is also from Simplicity 1374. It is made from a heavy raspberry-colored terry cloth and monogrammed on the front wrap piece. I didn't have wide-enough FOE for the straps, so I used strips of ITY knit the same way.

I have had people ask me about whether I do custom sewing for several years, but I just have not felt I had the right product to offer in terms of a fair market price that would be worth my time (and without the market being over-saturated). I figured it out, though: cheer & gymnastics gear. I think I could sew tumbling shorts in my sleep at this point, plus I have a wide range of sample items and a ton of fabric (plus a REALLY adorable little model).

I already have one sample item listed with much more to come: Flippin' Cute Cheer Gear

Here's my latest. It's a crop top version of Jalie 3354 and the shorts from Jalie 3247 with a custom cheer bow to match.

I have a lot more of this awesome red fabric!

X-back to the future

My girlie in action!

I have been working on a new prototype crop top/sports bra based on an X-back leotard and I'm excited about how cute this turned out. I also was able to add a monogram (I used Designsbyjuju's bean stitch monogram).  One of the other moms from the gym made the bow (It says "This beauty is a beast.") and when I saw that it was from the same fabric, I had to get it - perfect match and I didn't have to fool with making one.

She wore this to the gym today and said it was very comfortable. I'm working on how to do this for a girl who might need more support in the top than my seven year old. I ordered some spandex spacer fabric, so I'm excited to try that out.

I also embroidered this cute design I found on a t-shirt for her: "Forget the glass slippers - this princess wears cheer shoes."

I am listing this outfit as a customizable design on my Etsy shop.

Notice-me color-blocking with Vogue 1408

I love color blocking ,and I love ponte knit, so Vogue 1408 (from the newly released batch) was an easy choice to make. The dress has a flattering shape that drapes well thanks to the weight of the fabric. It is fully lined - I chose a magenta and white geometric pattern ITY from my stash.
The pattern envelope dress is shades of black and dark gray, but that doesn't do it for me. I have my share of those colors, but a little goes a long way. Intense red, magenta, and dark purple stand out and this is a dress worth being seen in! (Plus, I'm a sucker for anything "red for ed.")

It's all about the NEON!!!

Okay, between a 4 yard cut of neon pink ponte knit and a pile of beautiful, bright neon sweatshirt material I got on clearance at Hancock Fabrics (in pink, lime, teal, and raspberry), I was ready to have a massive 80's flashback, but with a 2014 style vibe.

Here's what I made:

Butterick 6053 - in neon pink and black ponte knit & full lined in ivory and peach ITY knit (ivory where it might show at the sleeve and peach in the skirt to use up a remnant)

I had loads of the pink ponte left, so I made up leggings and a top from Ottobre magazine 1/2006 issue.

Then, I dove into the sweatshirt fleece...The two layer skirt is from 1/2008 Ottobre and trimmed in pink ponte knit. It looks cute with this Tinkerbell top I got her on clearance at a Disney Outlet.
Then, I stitched up a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie from the Spring 2014 Ottobre. (Designs #20 & 30) Having all these colors made the project fun to color-block and everything mixes in well with the bright colors and glittery prints my daughter favors when we buy things at stores (like Justice - which is where I picked up the neon pink tank top on sale today).

I also used the fleece to make two trendy tops for myself. The neon lime is Simplicity 1317 (view F) with a rounded applique monogram.

The raspberry sweatshirt (also monogrammed) is Jalie 3355, but since I didn't have any ribbing to match this intense shade, I used some lycra spandex that was a perfect match!

Gracie loves her new fall clothes and so do I.

I think maybe I can now take the neon thread out of the serger and work with something just a touch more subdued. (Or at least not neon - I don't really do "subdued" a lot.)

Let It Go!

McCall's 7000 is clearly an unofficial version of the beloved characters from Frozen, Anna and Elsa. Gracie wanted to be Elsa for Halloween and I thought it would be fun to be Anna. I haven't made the Anna costume yet, but Elsa was fun to sew.

The fabrics are all from Joann (avoid the nasty costume satin - I always go for the bridal stuff). French seams and narrow double-turned hems will make the sheer parts look great.

I cut a 7-8 for length, but took in the bodice a lot. Clearly, they sized this for moms who sew once a year for Halloween not to have fit issues, but Elsa is a sleek character and does not need a billowy bodice.

The crown was a Disney store purchase.

Cheer uniform knock-off

My little girl (who you know is obsessed with cheerleading if you read this blog), hangs out with the cheerleaders at the middle school where I teach. She goes to their practices and has pretty much become the little mascot. She wanted to match them, so I drafted a cheer uniform to match what the big girls wear.

This is the actual uniform.

THIS is what I made.

I'm pretty proud of my efforts. I have never drafted a fitted garment just from body measurements, so I was thrilled when I got the skirt to fit on the first try.

The shell took two attempts (okay, maybe one and half because I only did the top half of the front one time). I had to add some length (very creatively) and re-cut the back.

The trim was a bit of a pain. I got athletic trim from the "Team Spirit" collection at Fabric.com, but I had to layer it to get the same effect as the trim on the school uniforms. I also had to go with Vegas Gold instead of metallic gold, but it's close enough.

The bottom line is GRACIE LOVES IT!!!

She is ready to get her cheer on at the football game this week.

Inspired by Disney

I had a customer request through my Etsy shop for a Frozen-inspired all-star cheer outfit & sports bra. This, in turn, inspired me...I love me some Disney! So here is the first in my collection:

Why, yes, I have been sewing!

Ottobre 3/2010 - #34 California skirt - done in Frozen-themed fabric and fussy cut to take advantage of the character placement with fine-wale corduroy in a purple/blue ombre (reminded me of the northern lights) for the contrast gores
Jalie 3136 leotard done in contrasting, glitzy lycra and turned into a crop top for cheer (with my go-to Jalie yoga shorts pattern #3022 for the bottoms)
Back view - gotta love that fabric!
Basic design with stunning fabrics - sports bra and shorts from Jalie 3247 - the shorts are made from shimmery teal stretch velvet
Completing this cheer look for winter is Jalie
Back view - the top is meant to be layered with the sports bra peeking out
#sparkle - now with attitude! (from Justice...I hate sewing sequins.)
Here's the outfit in action at tumbling tonight.
Simplicity 2190 - layered skirt from scuba knit plaid (and black ponte knit - in the colors of my daughter's team!)
Kwik Sew 0155 (make-up bag (for DD's cheer competition cosmetics) - I ended up making all 4 views (need to take some pics!)

McCall's 6171 in red ponte knit and lined with zebra ITY knit - a really fun and comfy look for work

The Holiday collection

I went traditional this year and sewed a taffeta and velvet frock for Gracie, but I couldn't resist making Benjamin this matching vest. I also sewed up Dad's tie (actually, I made two - one for each of the big brothers who were too cool to wear theirs today).
Benjamin's vest and bow tie are from Simplicity 1509. I made an 8 and it fits well through the body although I should have added an inch to the length. Oh well, once we are past this month, he won't wear it again anyway. I love this look with his fedora - such a little gentleman.

Chris's tie is from Vogue 9073. I'm really pleased with this pattern and would definitely make it again.

Gracie is wearing a dress from the 06-2013 (#24) issue of Ottobre. It is lined in red (as are the vest and the ties) and I found a similar style dress in this McCall's pattern 6006.
Here's another view of the collection - I used both red and royal blue shiny tulle for the crinoline of the dress. She liked how fluffy it made things.

Christmas gift sewing

Merry Christmas from my family to yours! Here are my four kids doing "reindeer antlers" with their stockings (made in 2010) before the present-opening began.

They are getting bigger and wanting more things that require charging cables or trips to stores which sell name-brand items they covet, and yes, I do indulge. I know nothing makes a teen feel more individual than wearing the same brand all of his peers are...lol. Don't even get me started on Justice, but at least Gracie still loves mama-made items, too. She really liked the Frozen costumes for her American Girl dolls.

I used Simplicity S0747 to sew all four Frozen costumes. Honestly, this pattern was kind of a beast to sew. (See my Pattern Review for the gory details.) So many different fabrics, so many trims, so many details...but so darn cute!

I used fabric left from her Halloween costume to make Elsa's blue dress, but substituted white mesh for the sleeves and yoke because the pattern needed a stretch knit the costume did not.

Anna's blue outfit was pretty complicated, but doing the nordic pattern on the vest and skirt with fabric paint was a little less annoying than trying to heat-n-bond the appliques. I added a pair of black felt boots from McCall's 6480 which I embellished with gold fabric paint.

Of course, I had to make the coronation outfits as well, and they were just as much of a pain to create, but also adorable when complete. I added a hair accessory for Anna of my own design.

Since I was making these, I had to get her a big cuddly Olaf to go with the dolls' outfits, too.

The other outfit I made for Gracie's dolls was a version of Gracie's cheer uniform. There was a super-expensive official uniform replica I could have bought, but that was insane (money-wise). I bought her a beautiful blinged-out warm-up jacket...not happening for a doll. Still, this was also a hit and will probably come with her to competitions so she can stunt with her doll like some of the other little girls on her team do when it's down time.

Here's some gratuitous cute pictures of my doll baby doing her thing! The stunt picture was from UCA Smoky Mountain Christmas championship in Seiverville, TN, and the other pic of her on the mat was from Champion Cup Nationals Holiday Cheers to You in Raleigh, NC. We've been busy!
I used Butterick 3329 as the base pattern for this outfit and traced the skating costume (view H) onto tissue paper. I skipped the collar and cropped the outfit into the top and spankies under the skirt. The skirt is a simple A-line I drafted to fit with the spankies and pull on as one unit (which is how the real thing works for all-star cheer). I sewed together the pieces of the top and then embellished it while flat and cropped the neckline to match the asymmetrical design of the real uniform. I even added heat-set rhinestones (because I wanted to try it and now know what a pain in the butt those things are). I made a doll-sized cheer bow because they are THE accessory for cheerleaders, and I purchased a little pair of all-white doll sneakers (luckily $6 with free shipping from Amazon Prime). I honestly can't wait to get some pictures of her with it when she is dressed for her next competition.

This is a My American Girl doll that matches Gracie pretty closely - if she had brown eyes, she'd really be a doppelganger. Gracie named her Little Gracie. Her nine year old brother calls her Chucky because he finds her creepy. This doll can get big cheer hair with no hair spray...wish it was that easy for the real Gracie.
For my mom, I purchased 3.5 yards of this beautiful fabric when we were out shopping and she admired it. She didn't know she'd find it wrapped and ready for her to pick a pattern for it as a Christmas present. She wants a short sleeve spring dress - we will work on this one in a month or two.
So, here's my newest crafting obsession - my new Silhouette Cameo 2 die-cutter. It is a super-sweet! I can't wait to try heat-transfer vinyl as well as lots of scrapbooking applications and adhesive vinyl.

I did my first adhesive vinyl project tonight and embellished this navy chevron plastic basket (purchased at Lowe's Home Improvement). This thing is going to be so much fun!

I'm not sure what my next big sewing project will be, but stay tuned!

Sewing around the house

Most of my new year's sewing will not leave my house, but that's okay! I've been all over organizing and just finished a new nightgown from a pattern that just might become a TNT pattern. (Simplicity 1260)

Simplicity 1214 has some great options for organizing. I made four versions of view G - one for each of my kids, plus I did the baskets from view F for my daughter.
Jamie's cat version hangs from the upper bunk (and hides some of the boy-related marks on the wall).

He was very pleased.

My high schooler is cool with Disney prints when it's like this. Unfortunately, his does not hide all the sin on the wall. (How the heck do they do that???)

Benjamin is the only one whose bed works with the pattern's original way of using it. I added ties underneath to attach it to the bed frame.

Here's a close-up of my favorite applique - Afro circus Marty from Madagascar 3.

I didn't make this, but I just had to share - how hilarious is the J'animal PJ-costume giraffe?
Here's Gracie's version - finished first. I added the ties and loops in order to hang it from her bed frame (much like I did the Cars one).

She is all about Frozen!

Cheer biz...

Since we did the Frozen cheer outfit in the fall, the idea of other Disney-inspired cheer/dance items has been on the burner. For this outfit, I did a mash-up of Jalie patterns - 3023 for the top (shortened), Jalie 3023 for the skirt, mixed with Jalie 3247 for the attached shorts.

The seashells are appliqued with a layer of spandex spacer foam under the metallic spandex. It gives it a neat, 3-D effect - a little clam shell texture.
I like the way the top binding and straps are all on application - came out very professional-looking. They are also set it far enough to not slip when tumbling.
The skirt's mermaid scale texture fabric is actually a soft spandex with a little bit of body to it.
Gracie is totally ready to tumble and stunt in this outfit! I am also offering this for sale in my Etsy shop (Flippin Cute - linked at the top right of my page).

This wasn't the only outfit I made her this week. I also messed with another pair of Jalie 3247 shorts and shortened the Jalie 3136 leotard to a cap-sleeve crop top.

Lookin' Fierce - I used my Silhouette electronic cutter to cut the heat-transfer material for the lettering as well as the figure on the shorts.
In action - working on her jumps
 Practicing an arabesque

I can't believe I was able to take these outside in early February - gotta love North Carolina!
